Prescription Drug Addiction Has Become a Growing Epidemic

September 11th, 2010

By Dane Alan Peterson

Thirty-one of 75 patients hospitalized for opioid detoxification told physicians they first became addicted to drugs legitimately prescribed for pain. Another 24 patients started their addiction with prescription pills from a friend or a parent’s medicine cabinet. The remaining 20 patients said they became addicted on street drugs.

This information was reported to physicians at the University of Buffalo. Ninety two percent of the patients in the study said they eventually purchased drugs off the street, primarily heroin, because it is cheaper and more effective than prescription drugs.

They told the physicians that they continued using drugs because they “helped to take away my emotional pain and stress,” “to feel normal,” or “to feel like a better person.”

The information will be used to train medical students and residents at the University of Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and practicing physicians to screen for potential addiction among their patients, and to direct patients to a treatment program if necessary.

Abuse of prescribed drugs is the biggest drug-related threat to the health and safety of Floridians. The 2009 Florida Medical Examiner’s Report revealed that overdoses from prescription drugs kill seven Floridians each day. This is five times greater than deaths from all illegal drugs combined.

The explosion of pain clinics in Florida has contributed to the problem. Many of these are “pill mills” where drugs are traded for money. Florida has become popular for drug-seekers from other states to come and get a supply of prescription drugs.

According to the 2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 70 percent of people who abuse prescription drugs get their supply from their friends and family. Other patients receive their prescription drugs from one physician. Many others “doctor shop” to receive their prescriptions for pain medication. Stolen, forged or counterfeit prescriptions are a common way addicts get their supply of prescription drugs.

In January, Florida convened a Statewide Prescription Drug Task Force made up of several state agencies and charged them with finding solutions to the problem. In conjunction with federal agencies, the Task Force has accelerated their attack on the criminal activity that often surround prescription drug use.

A law, SB 2272, was passed that granted greater authority for health officials to regulate the pain clinics in Florida. The Prescription Drug Monitoring Program will begin in December. It will allow physicians to look at their patient’s prescription history. As a result, potential “doctor shoppers” will be discouraged.

Tips in Taking Care of Your 6 Year Old

September 9th, 2010

By Charlene Sampilo

Daily Routines:

1. Bath time is more of a hassle to six year old boys than girls simply because boys need more supervision in cleaning themselves. It is important that your child brushes their teeth at least twice a day. Aside from brushing, flossing is also recommended at night. Fluoride supplements and Vitamin C should be regular given for them to develop healthy gum and teeth. It is also advisable for them to have regular dental visits every 6 months.

2. At 6, children have better appetite and stronger food preferences so it is important that they eat 3 regular meals a day and 2 snack times in between. Introducing them to healthy food like vegetables and fruits is important and avoid junk foods like soda, chips, candies and cookies.

3. More often than not, the 6 year old skips nap time so they need to be in bed at 8 or 9pm to ensure they get adequate sleep every day.

4. For your child to develop a healthy lifestyle, it is wise to be a role model yourself. Encourage physical activities by playing together - introducing them to sports like cycling, swimming, tennis or basketball. Limit their time watching television.

Character:

At six, your child’s physical, social, mental skills develop rapidly thus, it is a critical time for them to develop confidence in all areas especially in regards to friends, school works and sports.

1. At this stage, it is important for parents to recognize their child’s accomplishments by showing affection and encouragement.

2. In sports, it is good for your child to develop a healthy attitude in both winning and losing.

3. At home, children this age should start being taught simple responsibilities like helping household chores like setting the table or picking up toys/ books after being used.

4. Do fun things together as family by playing games, reading books and watching appropriate television programs.

5. Support your child in new challenges, be involved in school activities and most of all, encourage him to solve his own problems such as disagreement with others. This helps them to develop good self esteem.

Discipline:

1. Parents should give simple and clear instructions by making eye contact and checking them out regularly, making sure they carry out instructions.

2. Make clear rules and stick to it. Be clear about behavior that is okay and what is not. Let them understand that there will always be consequences of punishment in doing wrong.

3. Use discipline as a guide and protection for your child rather than using punishment to make them feel bad about themselves. Remember, always discipline with love.

This stage is a fun and enjoyable time for both parents and child. Following these tips could help in developing a healthy, happy and confident preschooler.

4 Easy Steps To Vitality

September 6th, 2010

By Emma Barrett

By “not feeling tired” you are not only taking care of your organs and cells, but your mind and it’s creative force will expand and put you in the space of feeling in control of your life rather than just being dragged along.

These Four easy “beginner” steps to regain energy and promote vitality will switch your body from struggling to strengthening. Implement them now and you will be amazed at how your body responds.

* Feed your body. Are you giving your body the micro and macro nutrients and minerals it needs? Do you even know what it needs? As an RN I see patients with bags of supplements which is a result of their guesswork. Not only is this dangerous but also an awful waste of money.

Once your little cells have the “fuel” that they need you have the BASICS down. This will get you to healthy, but I am looking for “vibrant health”. Having worked for world class athletes I am seen first hand what it takes to be in amazing shape. Although we don not have the time to spend 8 hours a day working ourselves there are a few secrets you can bring into your life.

* My secret weapon to every day stresses is a good “green drink” I choose a powder which I mix with water or juice and have a couple of glasses a day, especially if I am feeling sluggish or overwhelmed. If the green flavor is a little “scary” for you you can get capsules.

* Next vitality secret is free and abundant. Oxygen. When you wake up, if you can get even a 5 min walk outside, or even 20 jumping jacks, you will get oxygen flowing to your brain, awaken your lymph and boost your mood hormones. I love to get out in nature every day and make this a priority. Start small if this feels out of your realm. Whilst working at your computer take a break every hour and stretch, breathe dance, do whatever it takes to get the oxygen flowing through your body.

* The last secret is not so obvious but as absolutely crucial to regaining energy and vibrancy. Your mind, meaning your thoughts are the key to changing your everyday “thought’ habits. If you keep looking in the mirror and and telling yourself you are tired, fat or whatever, then that is what you will be. This is not rocket science, but it is REAL science. Thoughts are energy and what you think you do create. So as of today start monitoring your thoughts and be kind to yourself. Start reading some inspiration work and limit the amount of negativity you are exposed to {i.e the news}.

Let’s Review…

Supplement.

Nourish.

Oxygenate.

Happy Thought Patterns.

All the best

10 Myths about Swine Flu

August 11th, 2010

There are myths floating around world about this epidemic that might as well become the next pandemic. So I thought to compile some of the myths floating around the internet about swine flu. They are as follows.

  1. Pigs need to be avoided
  2. Eating pork can be dangerous
  3. Flu is dangerous just for the elderly
  4. Young, healthy people shouldn’t worry
  5. Face mask offers complete protection
  6. Swine flu cannot recur
  7. Family pets may be at risk, too
  8. Go back to work once you feel better
  9. Swine flu is much worse than seasonal flu
  10. Taking vitamins protects against the flu

Now let’s see what are the truth behind these myths.

  1. Swine flu does not spread from the pigs only. It is contagious in nature and is transmitting from human to human, not from pork to humans.
  2. There is a myth surrounding the swine flu that eating pork can lead to swine flu. However, there is no truth in it. Whenever you eat pork, it should be well cooked and that would kill the virus.
  3. It is a myth that only the elderly people are vulnerable to flu. The fact is that anyone can catch flu, be it young or elderly, including children.
  4. Recent studies have shown that even young and middle aged healthy people can catch the infection. So, everybody needs to be cautious against it.
  5. Face masks do offer some amount of protection against the flu, but they do not offer guaranteed protection. Washing your hands frequently and wearing face masks
  6. After recovering from swine flu once, it does not mean that you won’t get the infection in future. Swine flu virus is notorious for mutating; so a recurrence is possible.
  7. Viruses rarely pass between human beings and cats or dogs.
  8. Both kids and adults who have had suffered from swine flu need to stay at home for at least 24 hours after fever goes away without the use of fever-reducing medicines.
  9. Swine flu doesn’t seem to be more virulent than seasonal flu as symptoms of the disease are largely the same like fever, cough, throat infection etc., but H1N1 is slightly more
  10. While it is important to eat well and healthy, adding vitamins cannot help to strengthen the immunity. More important for the immunity is a sufficient amount of

All of these Myths and their answers are compiled from all over the internet.

Proper education is the biggest weapon any disease or natural calamity.

Activated Defensio

August 9th, 2010

I am growing tired of the comment spams I am getting. This blog is my personal take on the different health conditions and their available treatment options available. I am trying to go real pro on its quality level. We are calling upon different experts as authors to contribute articles for the enrichment of knowledge. We are not there, but surely we are on our way. But this kind of blog attracts a lot of spammers. They want to sell different things. Well I am not against them any way. But if the comment is totally rubbish and outright vulgar, then how can somebody accept it. As all of my readers know that I am not that much software savvy, still I have tried to manually remove the spams. But then it has been becoming a herculean task.

So today I have installed Defensio. I hope it works. It is a plugin. I did not tried Akismet as it says if you are using the blog for professional use then pay. Well I am not against paying,  and Defensio has this option built into too. But in Defensio they are yet to make an announcement and this blog is yet to earn on a professional level.

So bye for now and get going with your healthy habits.
